Default How to Get Started Creating a Website

David asked this Question and since it was lost when the Data Base Crashed I will re post my reply to Him.

    David

To get started you will need a domain name and a Web host. I use 1and1 to host my site but there are several out there that may fit your needs better.

I've been told it's best to register you domain separately from you web host so if you have problem with the web host you can easily change host.

As for making the site itself there are many ways to do it. My first site I used just plain HTML then I stated using Frontpage 2000, for Christmas in the Grove and Carolina Mini Workshop I use Joomla a content Management System. I think Al mentioned CoffeeCup

May I suggest you use 000webhost a free service to try out different web site designs and see what works best for you.

If you need help just ask.

    Dave -
Carl's right; register the domain separately from the web hosting, or at least make sure you can change web hosting providers easily.
As to where to register your domain: I used to use Yahoo until they had an unexpected 250% price increase per year (from $10 to $35) over a 3 month period. I've switched to GoDaddy since then; their pricing is consistent. I host my own web site on my DSL connection, with a static IP address. The static IP address costs me $5 per month, but the upload speed (web site view speed) isn't that great, only a max of 768k. That's ok for my uses, though.
I run an Apache web site on a CentOS linux box. I do it myself because it's another expensive hobby, and I can tweak it any way I want to (if I could find the time) I've seriously been thinking of going to a content management system, as most of my web stuff is static hand-coded HTML, and I don't have time to update it like I should.

Hi, I'm a software engineer in a dot com company and the best web development tool for us is Dreamweaver cs4. I've developed alot of sites already and Home lighting Advice and Artificial Trees are just one of them.

As to Content Management System (CMS), I usually prefer Joomla and Drupal because they are easy to customize and flexible enough that you can do just about anything.

Ohh another good CMS, well more of Ecommerce software, is Magento. If you are planning to put up a shopping cart, then Magento is the way to go.
