    Default Looking for 1/2" Rebar

Anybody have a suggestion for where I can find a good price on 1/2" rebar ? I am looking for about 70 feet. I recall buying it years ago and it came in numbers (like #4 #5) etc. I am not sure which "number" is approx 1/2." Help approciated.
    Thanks,

I buy it at Lowe's. #4 is 1/2". It is cheap. The number refers to the 1/8" size i.e. #5 is 5/8".

If you need large quantities Stock Building Supply or Guy C. Lee in Apex are good choices. Ask for a contractor discount.

    How about Dillon Supply?

I know that Sanford Pipe and Steel has it; the price I bought 20 feet of #3 (3/8") was the same as a 2 foot piece of #3 at Lowe's, or darn near close.

The hardest part is the minimum order price. Sanford Pipe and Steel is $50; I suspect Dillon Supply is similar.

If you need help coming up with enough for a minimum order, I want some #5 for my mega-tree guy wires; I was nervous about the #4 I had pulling out of the ground - mostly due to length, not thickness, but if I'm going to replace it, I'd rather go thicker.

I am curious about your use of the rebar. Only because I originally used 1/2" rebar to drop 1/2" PVC pipe over it. Then after my first year I learned that the 1/2" PVC gets stuck on the 1/2" rebar once the rebar gets a little rust on it. I found that the smaller rebar (about 3/8") still works perfectly for 1/2" PVC pipe.

Rebar holds almost everything on the ground in my show, and it's no deeper than about 24" in the ground. Even the blowmold bears where the bottom is about 30" high. We handled 50moh winds with no issues. Of course I would not anchor my mega-tree .. but the the tricked-up blowmolds, mini-treees, border posts, Santa's archm and signs, the small rebar works perfect.

Great idea to spray paint the rebar.

    Mike -

Painting the rebar is probably a good idea; it would decrease the rust.

I use the screw-in anchors on my 10' mega-tree in my neighbor's yard, mostly because I'm afraid of someone tripping over the guy ropes and impaling themselves on the guy stakes. That's only a10' tree, though.

The 20' tree is inside a fenced-in area, so I'm not as concerned about someone tripping over the guy wires and impaling themselves, other than me being my normal clumsy self. The hammer-in rebar stakes work well; same idea as they use for the big tents to guy those things. I didn't have any problems last season with the #4 rebar, but I did see where they were moved a bit by the stresses of the wires pulling on them. Not much, but enough I'd like to have longer pieces and go deeper into the ground. I'd also like to go thicker, as long as I'm buying longer.

OK, that brings up my next entry, but I'll do it as a separate entry rather than include it in this psted reply.

OK, how about a TASL group buy? This is interest only.

Anyone else interested in rebar? The supplier I use sells it in 20' sections, but offers to cut it in half (10') for easier transport.

Rebar is sized in the number of eighths of an inch in thickness, so....

    #3 rebar is 3/8 inch
    #4 is 4/8, aka 1/2 inch
    #5 is 5/8 inch.

Checking with Sanford Steel and Pipe - my normal supplier - today's prices (subject to change, but not much)

    20 foot pieces:
    #3 $4.35
    #4 $6.71
    #5 10.79

Also, for those of you thinking megatree
    1-1/4" 21 foot black iron pipe - $33.81

Details of a group buy to be worked out yet, but what interest is there?

    Just FYI -
    Lowe's - #3 - 10 foot - $3.50 Shop REBAR 3/8" X 10' (#3 ) at Lowes.com

    Home Depot - #4 - 10 foot - $5.20 Weyerhaeuser 1/2 in. x 10 ft. Rebar-05366 at The Home Depot

I just replaced most of my 1/2" last year, so I don't need much. I'd like to add a couple more rows to my blowmold groups in front of the mega-tree for 2014 (18 months from now), so having some extra would be nice. If you do buy a bunch, you could put me down for two of the 20' number 3.
    Thanks,

yes jack i had fears of somebody tripping as well when i designed my set up for my mega tree my guy wires are part of the lower hoop so to get tripped up by my anchors youd have to fall tru the tree -lower-hoop-anchors.jpg

I only use rebar for in-ground purposes, for things like holding up my arches (pvc conduit slides right over it), blow mold stabilization, megatree stabilization / guy wires etc. I use cold rollled steel for the actual wire frames I've made..
