    Default Hybrid Spiral Mega How-to

After the many questions about last years tree, I decided to try and answer them with a How-to.

The specs on the tree are as follows....
Height: 15ft, (14ft for the pole, 1 ft for base and adapters) not including star
    Base Diam: 7ft

    20 Channels for White Spirals
    20 Channels for Green Mega

All lights are standard 100ct incandescent minis. Approx lighted length 24ft.

I do not remember where I found the calculator, but my thanks go out to the creator.

Hope this clears up most of the questions. Feel free to msg me if I missed something.

Here is a link to the tree in operation.

Thanks for sharing that spreadsheet. How are the lights attached to give it the curved look? I mean I guess if you tie them to the support strands they just kinda roll around the outside an make a natural curve?

Thats exactly how you do it. You just wrap the lights around the support strands. You really dont need to tie the spirals to the support strands very much. I estimated that I had about a dozen or so wire ties at various spots holding the spirals in place. Not including the ties at the stakes.

To help visualize how to sequence the spirals, I am attaching the sequence for the video above.

I plan to have two megatrees next year and may make them both this way. It is a pain to erect though.

I am thinking RGB mini-Mega tree next year. Probably 6 or 8 foot tall. I would elevate it off the ground to have more impact. How long are the RBG pixel strings ?

I would size the tree to get two runs from each pixel string. Then decide on how many strings I would buy. Thinking around 8 strings for 16 lines on the tree. Maybe more if the price is right. Would be my first jump to DMX, either LOR S3 or LSP software. Game on to figure out which one is the right choice for me. Since Dariusz and I are only a few blocks apart, I'll drag him into the software decision too .. :-)

Perhaps TASL would consider a group buy next Spring for RGB pixel strings ?

Are these strings considered durable enough to be hung mega-tree style without pulling apart or leaking ?

Every bulb addressable separately .. Awesome ..
    Thanks,

I guess some thin stainless wire .. possibly stranded. The clear-coated type is too think. I am thinking something thin that won't rust. We'll have to noodle the design so some of the engineers can kick holes in it ..
