Can you be more specific about which HD Supply and which grade of pipe you bought ? I am wondering if the guy quoted me the wrong stuff ?

I called the HD Supply on Yonkers road this morning <919-878-9400> and they quoted me $3.19 per foot for 1 1/4" black pipe and $4.43 per foot for 1 1/4" galvanized pipe.

They only sell in 21 foot lengths and the pipes are threaded both ends. They also said they are out of the black pipe and only have the galvanized.
    Thanks,

Default 21' Black Pipe from Frischkorn in Morrisville

While making calls today, I found another source with good pricing for the 1 1/4" black pipe. Their price is $1.33 per foot for black and $1.63 per foot for galvanized. And they did quote me for Schedule 40. They have stock in both types as of Sept 28th. Here's their contact info:

There are lots of places that sell BIP. I posted the HD Supply since it is a national chain.
Yonkers is the place that we got Walter's. It would not surprise me that Dillion Supply didn't sell BIP.

still a little confused on why you whant to cut the pipe if you get a stick of BIP it has threads on both ends. therfore less work.

Based on the 24 foot lighted length of my mini light strings, I think 21 feet might be too tall. My upper base ring will be about 2 feet off the ground, so at 21 feet tall it would take about 20 feet of lights to reach the outside edge of my upper ring. Then another 4 feet "in" - forming the bottom of the tree to the small "trunk" ring. But I also want the "trunk" look .. so I am about 2 feet short to get the the ground.

That's why I am figuring I need to cut the pipe down to somewhere between 18 feet and 19 feet. And I think I would rather error on the short side. If I have any extra lights at the bottom, I can always fold them back up. There won't be many. I also need to consult one of the megatree calculators to get the exact distance from the top of the tree, down to my top outer ring.

I hope this makes sense ..
    Thanks,

Denny do you have guy wires planned. You really only need 3 at 120 degrees from each other. Regardless of the number of guys they MUST be equally spaced around the pole at the ground.

We bought Walter's steel guy wire at AgriSupply in Garner. It was cheaper than Lowes or HD.

Yup, I got the megatree topper with the pulley and 4 support brackets. I will be grabbing a bunch of steel cable for the guy wires and also the winch cable. I was thinking of checking Northern Hydraulics for a low cost winch, but Agri might be a good place for the winch too.

I picked up the pair of 21' BIP today at Frischkork in Morrisville. $27.93 each. Decided I didn't need to worry about galvanized since I will paint these anyhow.

Do you guys paint your PVC megatree bases black, or just leave em white and gray?
    Thanks,

Al or Walter how are you mounting your pole in the ground? Are you installing a short piece in the ground which is threaded on top and using a union to install the main mast. Or inserting it into a larger piece of pipe.

Thomas, I have a 3' pipe buried into 3 feet of concrete that is married to a coupler and the main pole. I bored the hole with a rented, gas-powered, 12" auger. I punched the holes for the guy wire anchors at the same time. $20 for the rental if I remember correctly. I recommend burying the short piece of pipe with concrete. You can use the fence post concrete dry mix in which you dig the hole, put in the pipe, pour the dry mix into the hole, then add water. I know there are easier methods but the forces on the pipe can be great at times. It is cheap insurance. You can bury the pipe without concrete but ... Make sure the pipe is perpendicular to level or your megatree will be slanted.

I buried the short pipe so low that that the pipe with a cap doesn't hit the lawn mower blade. I did such a good job of getting it so low that Walter and I had a hard time finding the guy wire anchor points. We had to use a metal detector.

The first night my megatree was up it experienced 55 MPH winds with 0 effect. It should withstand 3 times that wind load. It didn't cost much money to make it that way either.
