Default How many strings to put on a 20' mega tree?

How many light strings do you guys typically put on your mega trees? I'm still trying to get a 20' tall one together for this years show if I have enough stuff.

    Thanks!

It really depends on the number of controllers and how much weight your tree can support. I have a steel pole and I have put 16 strings for 3 colors. That is kind of sparse so I plan to increase that to 32-48 depending on the weight involved. I plan to use 4 colors this year.

Our TASL meeting is tomorrow (Wednesday) at 7 pm at Starbucks Lake Boone. I hope to see you there.

I had a total of 96 strands on my tree last year which was 32 r,g,w. I had it on a 1 1/2 piece of metal pipe.

As has been mentioned already, it's all about the size and look of your tree.

My 12' tree has 16 strands of 3 colors (R, G, B) of C6 70 count = 48 strings and channels. Each strand is looped at the top, so there's actually 2 strings of each color for each "strand". You can look on my website to see how it looks.

The taller the tree, the more it spreads out at the bottom and so it may appear less full. Having other elements of your display at the bottom will help "hide" the lack of fullness if you do it right. I have put some smaller, mini trees made of tomato cages around the bottom to fill it in.

New location - new display. Looking forward to 2015 season!

My 21' mega-tree is built with 1 1/4" steel main pipe with 4 steel support wires (1/4" I think). Mine is 64 strings of lights. I am using 4 colors (red, white, blue, & green). I use 32 channels and drive two strings of each color per channel. It's not quite as "smooth" as 48 or 64 channels, but I am happy with it. A lot of people go without blue, but I need blue. Much of my design centers around American flags (made of lights), Stars, plus red white & blue icicles ..

I have also compensated the lack of granularity in the mega-tree by putting a ring of 8 mini trees in a half circle for the front 180 degrees of the mega-tree. When I make the mini-trees "move" with the corresponding mega-tree slices, it give a great feeling of depth when viewed from the front. I like this effect so well that this year I am moving to 3 rows of mini-tree instead of one. There will be a lot more 3D "moves" I can make by having the mini-tree rows in two dimensions (and still make the mega-tree slices line up or "complement" the mini trees) ...

Thanks for all the great advice! I was going to start with 42 but was concerned that it might not be enough to look full. Considering how narrow my front yard is the base area will likely look fairly full and help hide this area.

Unfortunately I'm still not running LOR yet but I think I will be by.........next year? It'll be a while before I can get to the hundreds of channels you guys are running but this gives me something to strive for.

Appreciate the invite. I saw the meeting listed some time back. Unfortunately I am tied up tomorrow. Couldn't make the convention in Feb because of my daughters birthday. I do plan to become active, especially once I get going with LOR. I know I'll end up having lots of questions. Having a relatively static show for now makes things easy. I'm hoping to step up to at lest several channel of LOR for next year.

You didnt say what the base diameter was, but assuming 10', you would have around a 62.8 circumference. Divide this by the number of strands to get the base spacing.

I think you would want 6" spacing between strands in the middle of your tree. This would mean 64 strands (gives 11.8" spacing at the base).

To save money i would build a half megatree.

I built a tool that allows you to do what if's with different heights and string and pixel counts.
The tool is called the Nutcracker. You can find threads about it here.

    Nutcracker: RGB Effects Builder
    How do I...?
The Coffee Shop - The Midway Zone (Not necessarily LOR ... Login for full access) - Light-O-Rama Forums

The actual tool link is Nutcracker: RGB Effects Builder.

Here are some the effects that can be produced so far

    Butterfly wing

    Meteors

    Scrolling text

    Garlands

    Spirals

    Tutorials are on meighan.net/nutcracker page

The tool is free and supports LSP, LOR and Vixen. It is still alpha, Beta expected by June.
    thanks
