I had the good fortune of front row center seats with my wife yesterday to see John Tesh's show at Meymandi Auditorium yesterday. John is one of my favorites and his show was spectacular. At one point in the show he was picking on people in the front row, including yours truly .. he had me stand up and he taught me his "no touching" handshake (he's a serious germ-o-phobe) .. It was fun..
But what was a real surprise was his amazing twin RGB walls. I was able to count the pixels by looking at the support grids .. and his walls were 96 x 96 pixels (18 full DMX unverses) each wall ! The spacing grid appeared to be a little less than 1.5" .. possibly 1.25" because the walls were about 10 feet tall. The vertical pixels appeared to be mounted in tubes and the tubes were clipped into supports of some sort. They most likely came apart in groups which would have to go inside some outraegous cases for protection. His show was amazingly well timed to the light displays. The drum riser sat in front of the left wall and during some drum solos there were outrageous lightning bolts that looked like they were shooting out of the drums due to the proximity.
I could see one of those RGB walls standing in front of my center garage door for the Christmas show .. Whoooooooo boy ! He had a lot of other DMX technology, including 20 of the Elation LED Pro moving head spots ($2500 each), plus four of the new Elation "WASH" LED Pro Spots ($3500 each!). Throw in a pair of the giant moving head spots that are about 4 feet long (yipes) .. He had a wild show.
I wanted to try to strike a conversation with the light guys after the show, but we were up front. By the time we could move back the guys had vacated their booth in the middle of the theater ..
