I wouldn't start with 2. The concepts are a little different between the two. Either stick with 2 or 3. The development teams aren't even the same. They split based on some disagreement. I'd go to 3 since it is actively being developed.

I would highly suggest starting with Vixen 3. We started with Vixen 2 and then had to switch to Vixen 3 because once the channel count gets around 100 it is difficult to deal with in Vixen 2. I can help walk you through the profile setup and startup in Vixen 3. If you need any help with it just pm me

Vixen 2 and Vixen 3 are different developers. Although I am not a Vixen user, I do not think there is a migration path from Vixen to 2 anything. I suggest you meet Joe @Tripplett for coffee to learn more about the flexibility of Vixen 3 .. It might not seem like it today but there's a good chance you might want compatibility with other software in the future. Particularly if you ever add any pixels or even just basic RGB. Or if you want to run Pi players (large displays that run better than laptops using a $35 computer) .. etc.
    Thanks,

my son, Ben replied yesterday. This is Gregg. yes, we use the same handle for now.

Here is a tutorial from vixenlights on setting it up.

Whatever questions you have about using 3 there are more than enough people to get you up and comfortable with vixen3.

You can export from 2 to 3. It's a royal pain, but I have done it. In fact I have downloaded a v2 sequence from landolights and successfully imported to 3. The file it resulted in was enormous, (over 140mb) and was so unwieldy that I have decided to just do the sequence from scratch in 3 than to try and work with what I imported from 2.

there are effects like spin's and numerous other effects (depending on your creative vision for your own show and sequence) in vixen 3 that are simply and quickly implemented that are excruciatingly complicated, imperfect and time consuming in vixen2. And 3 has a pretty good beat finder built right into it.

Yes, 2 is very easy to learn, because there isn't much to it. 3 has vastly more potential to grow with wherever you decide to take your show and will enable you to unleash the creative genius lurking inside you. And it's free of course.

Ben learned 3 as soon as it came out, it took me a little while to get into it but it is very comfortable for me now.

Vix2 is like using Microsoft Paint to do your graphical editing when you have photoshop and gimp at your disposal, unless you have a very rudimentary need, then paint will very quickly become inadequate. or perhaps if you are unfamiliar with those platforms, then notepad and word might also be a sufficient analogy.

Thanks Ben and Gregg - Too funny, your analogy, because I actually use Paint instead of photoshop since I can manipulate images a whole lot faster with it than the other. Doesn't help that my hubby is a prof photographer. That being said, I am willing to learn and can 'voluntell' my hubby to provide y'all some complimentary photog for your websites in exchange for really dumbing down vixen 3 for me . I will load it this evening and see where it takes me.

I have yet to find the batching and actions functions in paint. Paint's web optimization are a little obsolete, but if it gets the job done for you then go with it! lol

And could grow to 80 if you opt for one of my used controllers. :-)

Also good to have a spare when your channel count starts getting up there.
