William, why are you buying a snow machine? Didn't you get enough snow and ice last year without making more?

Do these behave well with the controllers or will they need an electronic relay ?

It would also be nice to know if the home-made fluids would work - - such as the formula I posted last year. I just tried to post another copy but the "edit" feature on this site will not let me add attachments. It shows me the upload window but locks up.

I make my own fluid and use it with no problem.
I liketo make my own snow solution! Commercial solutions can get quite expensive.

Detergents: During my world travels, I have tried hundreds of soaps and detergents as a basis for my mixtures. The best I've found are Joy and Dawn detergents, made in the USA. Ivory and Palmolive detergents are just ok. Since climate and other conditions vary widely, you must use recommendations made here only as a guide. You need to experiment to get the perfect mixture for your use.

Additives: When I need to make really colorful, sturdy bubbles, I add glycerin to the mix. Glycerin is available at most drug stores, but be forewarned, it is expensive so I order my glycerin by the gallon from CQ Concepts http://www.cqconcepts.com/chem_glycerine.php ! Glycerin sold in rose water or other solutions is pretty much worthless. A much more practical and less expensive additive is white Karo Syrup which is available at the grocery store. I use formula #1

Water: Water, a key ingredient, varies widely in its quality. One bubble solution manufacturer I know ships huge containers of water from the USA to its mixing plant in China where water quality doesn't meet the necessary standards. Soft water is good for bubbles. Hard water, well water, and any water containing high levels of iron is bad for bubbles. To get the best mixture, try using distilled water which is available at the grocery store. The tap water where I live is good so I usually use it in my mixtures.

    Denny,
I would expect that you'd need a relay. I know that fog machines need time to warm up, and so you can't just turn a controller channel on/off to get fog. But snow machines may be much simpler, and don't need any advance power before the effect can be run.

It may be that the remote control just controls part of the electronics, and so you could use the relay there, or perhaps supply 120V via a controller channel on the right wires and get it to start/stop.

An SSR would be the best thing if you need to control 120V AC - since I don't expect the snow machine controls to take much current - and a SSR doesn't put any load on your controller channel either!

New location - new display. Looking forward to 2015 season!

Thanks Mark. After I wrote the post I decided the Solid State Relay (SSR) would be needed since there's a fan motor inside. But also if this unit is controlled like my American DJ Bubble machine, then it could be run with just the SSR by leaving their remote control box unplugged. By AC only. The remote pictured with this snow unit is the exact same unit as my bubble machine, so it should be able to be removed (and work the same way).

For the guys who are going to wire this one up to a controller, let us all know if the remote control box can simply be unplugged. That should let you activate the snow by 120v AC only. In that case a SSR would be perfect.
    Thanks,

The timer does not have to be unplugged, it can be set to contiunous run.

    Hi Denny,

Larry is correct on the timer. As you know we use a many a gallon of home made snow fluid and using a relay to control
the machine is the way to go.

Larry, I tried a formula like yours and had very little luck, but I used the regular and not the ultra. I also use the glycerine
like you do. I am going to try this tomorrow. Being using the bubble bath formula for years , but always lookin for improvement.
    Thanks for your formula.

    Don
