Default LOR LED RGB Flood Head

Saw this posted on LOR forum, new Flood Head and it's new controller really looks interesting.

    Both DMX and LOR protocol.

    John -

The link you gave is now removed, but it's probably the same as this

There's a thread on the LOR forums about this; apparently it's not production yet. Looks like it'd be very interesting, though. I wonder what the price will be?

Interesting - I was just trying to post the link, not the actual video there.

    Yes Jack,

I had seen that video last fall.

My GUESS is that it won't be released until LOR includes a Color Picker to make them easier to program.

I know that those of us with the CCR's will really welcome the software update.

Just saw this post in Mel's thread on the LOR forum regarding the RGB color picker update to the software from Dan at LOR today.

    Hi,

No date has been set. It is currently being worked on. Rather than just hack the RGB support into the code we are taking the time to re-design the internal structure of a sequence to support RGB and a number of new feaures that we have planned.

When it is ready for beta testing we will let people know. It will be released fairly soon after that.

Craig's XMAS flood has been coming Real Soon Now for awhile (more than a year). Now that LOR has purchased the rights to manufacture it, it's still been coming RSN. Like the CCR, if the hardware is ready, they should release it and not wait for the software to be ready. I would have bought some of these last year if they were available. But they weren't. Instead, I've built some of Frank's Mighty Mini floods. Are they as bright as the XMAS flood? No, but I can build 2-3 of them for the hinted price of what LOR is going to sell the XMAS ones...and they're available today.

No disrespect made toward Craig's XMAS floods or LOR - I'm just tired of hearing about how great they are but we can't get them...

I'll be bringing the floods I built to the TASL meeting in February.

There's a group buy being put together for the circuit boards for the Portaflood over on DoItYourselfChristmas.com; $8 per board plus $15 shipping for up to 7 boards. I've heard references to the Portaflood before, but really don't know anything about them. Comparable to the Mighty Mini? Closing date on that group buy is (I think, from memory) Feb 13.

There's going to be a group buy for the Mighty Mini Flood soon as well. There will be options of just PCB and full and parts-only kits. None of them include the flood housing itself.

    To contrast the two:

    Portaflood - 162 5mm LED's in R G B - fits in a large 500W flood holder
    Mighty Mini - 36 8mm LED's in R G B W - fits in a small 500W flood holder

You can check out both of these at DIYC.

In most cases, you should be able to get the Portaflood PCBs after the group buy, since wjohn makes big PCB orders. Recognize that he is located in Australia, and shipping to the US is reasonable, but takes longer. He sent me 2 smaller PCBs and it wasn't more than $5...

To save shipping, some folks might want to go in together if you want less than 7 boards.

I plan to order more Mighty Mini kits when Frank starts his group buy.

    Mark,

Why are you buying the Mighty Mini? I want to build me some RGB floods. I too am tired of waiting. The cost for the LOR floods will likely be out of my budget since I need about 10 floods. I guess programming colors other than red, green, blue, and white could be done in the matrix mode of LSP. This should be much cheaper to build than buy from LOR. You would need a DC controller to control them. The LOR dc controller CMB16D would handle it nicely but would need a 24Vdc fairly robust power supply.

I've only been buying the PCB boards for the Mighty Mini and building them out. Found a great 24V DC power supply, and have built both the MR16 controller from DLA and RPM's DMX8 DCSSR controller from DIYC.

Would love to do a bulk buy from CeCe's for the LEDs to build out more Mighty Mini floods.

Would also like to perhaps modify the PCB or add a constant current source for the LEDs to a controller...

Where are you getting your power supply. The bulk buy for the LEDs can be arranged.

Here is a better link to the board buy.

Denny have you looked this over yet?

Here is a link to a thread where the assembly is explained better: (I'm not sure if you have to register to view the thread)

Let me know if there going to be a bulk buy for anything on the Mighty Mini floods.

    Mark,

What is the MAX current draw for a Mighty Mini ?

I'm thinking about building 4, and I have a 24 volt 6.5 amp pwr supply.

Is it big enought for all four boards?

Each set of LEDs should take about 200mA per color when @ 100%. The LEDs are rated at 100mA each, but it varies by color and the resistor values used, and there are two parallel circuits per color. So 4 x 200mA = 800 mA per flood.

I've run 3 floods on probably the same 24 V 6.5 A PS, but have only built 3 floods. But it looks like you could run at least 5, perhaps 6 on that same PS.

Note that the original resistors used, or that comes with CeCe's LEDs were wrong, and there were some failures. None of my LEDs failed, but I didn't run them more than overnight. The floods never made it out to the display due to time. I measured up to 150 mA on the blues (per leg) without a problem, but that's definitely above spec. I plan to replace the resistors when I get more desoldering braid and the correct value resistors.

Ok, thanks Mark for the confirmation on the Power Suppy

Looks like Cece has updated their parts kit with the correct resistors now.

I have already ordered the boards from Frank

EDIT: Just saw your pwr supply link. This is the one I have, looks to be about the same specs (unless I missed something)

    and 5 bucks less !

    http://www.mpja.com/prodinfo.asp?number=16854+PS

and I had the pdf assembly instructions.. was just waiting to order the boards

NOTE: Franks assy instructions have have NOT been udated for the correct resistor valves
