Denny, I use this paint and primer that I bought for metal handrails. It is amazing. But it cost $100 a gallon for both the top coat and primer. We also use an encapsulant, whose name slips my mind just now, that is like water and you paint it on, and it stops rusting. It is pricey too but I'll have to ask the gentleman that paints my houses for me what the name is.

Which leads to another question - how much is reasonable to spend on a welder?

I happen to have a 100A feed that used to go to the heat strips in my old furnace (now gas fired) near my workbench. Bet I could get 240v hooked up to that...or another subpanel for more lights!

    Mark,

I use the Lincoln 3200 that I got a Home Depot. It works with flux wire or with gas. 115 volt model

Works great for wireframes. Cost approx $500

Any 140 amp or so mig would be great for wireframes, as long as you stay with a major brand Lincoln, Miller or Hobart

Stay away from the cheap Harbor Freight welders

    Al,
OK, back on original topic - the workshop on 3/27.

Do you have an idea of a general cost for the steel for the star? Depending on that, I may come and build one, but only if I get to re-learn my welding skills and see if it's worth buying a welder.

I know the date is bad for some folks, since it's the start or end of spring break week, I think.

As I've mentioned to Al already, I've got another project where I need a "frame" for some radial stars (similiar to Vic's LED star) and I figure building the wireframe may be the ticket.

So count me as a "maybe".

The steel cost for the star alone is about $15 or less if my old brain remembers correctly. The stand would be about the same amount. So for the complete star it might be about $25-$30. Please don't hold me to the numbers, but it is around that. The price of steel fluctuates.

Walter just informed me he has to work on Mar 27th which brings the workshop to a screeching halt since we were using his place. So, may I suggest that we move the workshop to Apr 3rd. He has those days off. What do you guys think?

Al - just have to watch out for more out of towners - that's Easter weekend. And some people might be operating their Easter lights display...

You are correct. Easter is early this year. I need to coordinate a date and time with Walter. Unless somebody wants to furnish a new place that has a 220V 30amp receptacle for the welder. My house doesn't have one yet. Walter and I will install it later in the summer.

Well Like Al said I just ran into a problem with my work on the 27th. I will not be available until PM at the earliest. We still can have the workshop at the house as long as its after 2. I'm willing to do most of the prep work for the workshop. On the 14 the time will change and give us an extra hour or so to work. Guys let me know if this works for yall.
    Walter

I can't do it that day. I'm still hoping to get in on the steel buy and hoping I can borrow the template sometime later. I have a friend who has a welder. Still need to talk to him about getting his help, but shouldn't be much of an issue for me.

I'm good for 4/3 as an alternate date, or for doing it in the afternoon of 3/27. Either way I'm open, since my wife and daughter will be in the Caribbean on a cruise while I'm stuck hanging around...

I'm voting for 4/3, after Charity and I help out at the Easter Egg hunt at Moncure Elementary that morning - or we may just let some of our fellow Lions Club members handle it that day; Charity really wants to have a star. I have to admit I do, too.

We are waiting on Mel to chime in before we change the date. I called him and left a message, so it should be soon on a reply.

I have heard not from Mel even though I called him. I am moving the workshop to Apr 3, 2010 at 9am. The deadline for signing up has been extended to Mar 20, 2010.

Mel is distracted with his new reason for putting up a display.

Charity and I will be there on April 3.

April 3 is real good for me... I cannot make it to March 27 now...
