    Default OFFICIAL TASL Meeting February 21, 2015 9am till 5pm <Details in Post #1>

Announcing the first meeting of 2015 for the Triangle Area Synchronized Lighting <TASL> group.

    Date and Time: Saturday February 21, 2014 9am - 5pm

    Place: Swift Creek Community Center
    6221 Yates Mill Pond Rd
    Raleigh NC, 27606

This is our 1st of three Saturday meetings for 2015. The next two will be May 2nd and August 22nd. There could be additional training meetings or workshops, depending on TASL members willing to step forward and coordinate them.

The agenda will be growing and changing so check back often. Also feel free to send your suggestions. We want to plan a mix of topics covering the basics for our newer members, as well as pixel related topics and other common interest topics.

A live feed online will be available for the meeting. Look up "TASL RDU" in Google Hangouts !

FINAL Agenda items for Feb 21st:

8:00 - 9:15am Setup and socializing. Come early for meet and greet. PLEASE EVERYONE ARRIVE by 9am !

    9:15 - 10am INTRODUCTIONS - 45 mins

    10:00 - 11am - Split Session -
    1) LOR BASICS and BEST PRACTICES, led by Scott Mclellan (breakout to the left side of the hall).
[*] A session for new members and those will don't plan to run pixels this year
    2) COMPLEX NETWORKING for Pixels, led by Sam Johnson
[*] A session for members who want to know more about running E1.31 networks with pixels[*] Sam will reference his 2014 Network Diagram (over 50 universes) running Vixen 3

11:00 - 12am Blaine and Kim Fuller will discuss their display, custom effects, controller/sequencer, and answer questions. They did North Carolina proud and won ABCs Great Christmas Light Fight this past December ! Since the win, they have been nationally known for their metticulous attention to detail. They proved it's not how many lights but what you do with them. Here is a summary video:

NOON - 1pm Pot Luck LUNCH (everyone bring something to share). Check the list and let Denny know what you will bring.

    • NOON - 12:45pm LUNCHTIME GROUP BUY DISCUSSION - Many have ended but the lowest price commercial LED string are still available. Be prepared to commit to buy if you want low prices for sealed full wave rectified LED strings and icicle strings. Our best candidate is the Holiday-Light-Express - Pre-Season Sale. There is an opportunity for free shipping if we hit $1000. Pre-Season Sale - Holiday-Light-Express
    • 12:45 - 1pm DRONE DEMO & AERIAL GROUP PICTURE - Paul Lowe will demo his drone and take group shots from the air.

1:00 - 2pm What Worked and What Didn't Work with your 2014 Display

    • Bring your successes and failures for this group talk. Open input from everyone.
    • This includes hardware or software or both.

2:00 - 3pm Share your past projects. Bring something to display and/or demo.

    • Dariusz - Column Pixel Modules, Compact Arch (easy to store)
    • Denny - Candy Caine Pinwheel, 27 channel DMX Controller (for 9 dumb RGB Strings)
    • Joe Tripp - Pixel Snowflakes, Raspberry Pie micro computer (amazing for only about $55).
    • Sam Johnson - Twin Projection Birdhouse
    • William Bottomley - One Lynx board, one pixel controller unit, DMX bridge, and a couple of next year's goodies
    • Others Welcome !

3:00 - 3:15pm Converting Retail LED Strings to Full Wave. New simpler method with a tiny circuit board - Denny Cole & Jack Stevens

    • This is the way to go for making your retail LED strings look PRO ! Your LEDs are brighter and your dimming is smoother.

3:15 - 3:45pm DMX AC Controller kits. Build your own for 75% less cost per channel (compared to LOR) k!

    • Renard Controller Kits (Group Buys on DoItYourselfChristmas.com)
    • Lynx Kits (Group Buys on DIYLightAnimation.com)
    • Live Experiment with LOR software running Renard hardware with SanDevices adapter (no USB adapter) !

    3:45 - 4pm TASL Business - Open TASL Discussion - Denny

    • If you committted to help the club rent rooms this year, please bring your $30.
    • Bank Balance Report
    • What topics and speakers would you like for the next two Saturday meetings ?
    • Are we ready to set one or more dates for a group workshop ?
    • Anybody want to schedule an early software training class? We can organize LOR and Vixen <separate> classes, plus Nutcracker.

4:00 - 5pm Pack Up, Fold the Chairs and Tables, Sweep the floor

I will arrive to open the hall by 8:15am for unloading and setup. We'll use the first hour to mingle and get set up. Swing in early for coffee .. Presentations will begin by 10am. We need to end the formal presentations around 4pm to begin teardown, and cleanup the hall. By the rules of our rental agreement we need to leave by 5pm. Many times they have another renter coming in after 5pm.

This is a POT LUCK LUNCH meeting. Please let us know what you will bring to share. Be sure to check what others are bringing so we can get a range of main dishes, side dishes and deserts. I can supply a Keurig machine to make coffee. And I can bring some K-cups. We could use a volunteer to bring cups and creamer. Also breakfast snacks are nice to have.

We've been threatening to do something about nametags for two year. I'll see if I can do better than the Sharpie Marker variety type this time.

Be sure to bring your own drinks for the day. There is plenty of room for coolers and a full refrigerator in the kitchen. The kitchen also has a full size stove with oven and a large microwave. There's lots time for baking or reheating before lunch !

This meeting is open to anyone who would like to participate, or just listen in for their first time. It is a good time for new members to sign up to be a TASL member for 2015. But you do not have to be a TASL member to attend a TASL meeting. If you are thinking about creating your first holiday show with synchronized lights and music, you can join a TASL meeting to learn more about how its done. Come on out and join us! If you are bringing friends or other family members, please make sure you post their names when you acknowledge your attendance.

We always have tables set up for an informal Christmas Garage sale throughout the day. Bring cash if you are looking fro deals. Bring your items to sell or trade. There are always some real nice deals !

Contact anyone from the TASL Steering Committee for more information:
    @kidcole, @Samj435, @Jack Stevens, @scottmcl, @robb3369

I'm in. I can lead the basics again, if you'd like. I will need to leave early, though. Blue and gold banquet for Cubs is at 5 that night.

Thanks Blaine ! I look forward to meting you and Kim. We will schedule some time for a discussion about your display .. and I think the guys would be very interested to hear about your new project for 2015 that you've been talking about on Facebook .. The Feb meeting is also a good time to brig out home-made items to give people ideas for what they might build in 2015.
    Thanks,

Sam, perhaps you give a technical overview of your giant driveway arch .. Was that 8 fully loaded E682s ? Also, are you resurrecting the twin projector system for 2015 ? Bring along any small projects to show. Bring the bed-sheet for the projector !

There is a growing number of Vixen users. One of these days you guys might want to hold a training class for Vixen.
    Thanks,

I'll be there. I'll have to get back to you on my food. I can also bring some display items. How about the rgb star? I can cover some of the things I did to get a half Vixen half LOR show via the Raspberry Pi. Or something else if you like..
