I have a proposed item for the first meeting, based on some questions that came my way:

How to convert 1/2 wave LED strings to full wave - 110 volt strings.

I'm thinking of pre-fabricating a dozen or so adapter cables, but not heat up the heat shrink, so people can actually see the bridge rectifiers so they know how to duplicate it. I'd leave the vampire plugs off until the presentation and bring a heat gun so people could also learn how to do the vampire plugs (if they don't already know) and go home with a test adapter.

Another proposed presentation is one that Al already told Mel he's doing - shooting and editing display videos.

I've read how to do it a bunch, so would love to see it in action.

I can revisit the "newbie" presentation again. Need to update it a bit maybe, though. Keep things interesting...

I definatly plan on being at a few of the meetings this year. I have been to a couple at starbucks, and had a great time. I have not done a show for a few years now, and its time I get my butt in gear. I have threats of my house being burned down if I dont do a show this year. I am hoping to make the jump back up to 8 controllers, but only time will tell. Any weeknight will work for me except Wednesday, thats the long day for me.

I think we should put text to the Newbie outline to make a TASL document. We could hand them out at TASL meetings when new folks join us.

All you have to do is show up for a meeting when you can make it. We also have an email list which is primarily for those who also want to help run the meetings, plan events, etc. The rest is all handled here. We usually post the agenda for meetings. And by tradition, most of them start out with introductions and also have time where people can share their ideas and creations. We also have time for different technical discussions so we can all learn from the various experts on the topics. And the meetings in the fall generally include software training. We always have a beginner class, but I can see an advanced class for this year, with so many people getting better at the software now.

Workshops are different. Those are strictly for building the "gadgets" .. most start with welding. But I could see a workshop for a deep dive on pixel strings, wiring standards, connectors and the little things that will drag us into the RGB world .. I suspect our first TASL meeting this year will include a segment to decide what we want to do for future meetings.
    Thanks,

    Denny Cole

You already qualify. We plan to make TASL into a 501(c)(3) entity in the future but for now we are a bunch of folks that meet, teach, share, and laugh together. TASL is an acronym for Triangle Area Synchronized Lighting which clearly says we like animated lighting-- and just about everything else Christmas come to think of it. We are a club that is primarily concerned with local stuff, but we love having people from other areas join us.

We have a Steering Committee meeting this week to discuss meeting dates and workshops. We will post dates, times, and places for the year shortly. We are going to have some good workshops this year. Denny keeps letting out our secrets. We do plan a group buy for LED nodes and stuff this year. I think it is time we progressed as a group to the next generation of lights, so we plan to educate and standardize some stuff so we all don't have to be experts on this stuff to make it work. We also are planning another welding workshop or two to build Bang and Walter Stars. The welding workshops are free but you have to pay for your own steel (we do a group buy for steel too) , cut it yourself the day of the workshop with our tools, then help weld the stuff. A few of us are pretty good welders. Our welding workshops have been great fun too.

So, come on down. Every so often we have a meeting that is pot luck lunch or Charity cooks something yummy for us--sometimes both. I'll bet you know Don Williams, Michael Hunter, and the other folks at Myra Lake Lights in Wendell. You might not know their names directly but I bet you will after coming to a couple meetings. Don and Michael have been known to teach a class when we ask nicely.
