The adapter has a special encoded micro chip in it so you can't make your own, you have to purchase it from LOR. You may want to have someone help you install the driver for it on your system as it is a complicated process.

Thanks, Vic! Guess we'll do that Wednesday night. Of course, I have to get this old version of Linux off the PC I plan to use first. Where's that copy of XP we have sitting around the house...

    Vic -
Do you know if the LOR adapter is specific to LOR, or will a DMX adapter work? And will the LOR adapter work with vixen and DMX? I've built a DMX SSR4, would like to test it, but if it doesn't work, I don't know if it would be a vixen issue, a LOR usb adapter incompatibility, or something wrong with the SSR4, or some combination. I ordered a DMX dongle kit, but don't have it yet.

    Scott -
Thanks for the us of your house. What do you want us to bring, other than the LOR stuff? Tables? Chairs (I have both, in folding formats, easily transported) Sodas? Ice?

    Jack,

Sorry, I'm not sure. My thinking is that DMX has its own langauge and any dongle should work with any software platform that supports DMX commands. Just a guess though.

I would like to know the answer though, since I don't want to have to cough up the big bucks for the LOR dongle to run my DJ Party lights this Christmas if a generic kit will work.

    Jack (and all coming),

Plan is to just crash around the dining room table so should be plenty of space. If not, we'll overflow into the attached family room. hadn't thought about much beyond that. If y'all want to bring some snacks/drinks, that's fine. Just want to be careful with all the power supplies and cords we'll have all over the place...

It is less expensive to buy your S2 software an RS485 adapter together. Here's a link:

    http://store.lightorama.com/spk800.html

Select the ADVANCED software package upgrade (unless you want controller limitations in the future)
Select the USB BOOSTER RS485B Upgrade (this is far worth the extra $15 for the boost circuit)
    They throw in a cable.
    The total is around $140

You can select the Accessories tab to buy the RS485B (Booster) unit separately for about $43.

Also per the DMX discussion. LOR software can only speak to LOR hardware adapters. You need the LOR RS485B unit or the LOR <expensive> iDMX adapter (which will link their software to any industry DMX controller).

well... I placed my order for the regular one this morning and JUST got the shipping notification. So I called and they said I don't need the booster.

They also said that deal was ONLY available when purchasing a controller with them at the same time. Ugh... So unless they start the big sale by this wednesday, looks like I'm paying full price for the advanced.

I looked at my purchase and I did not buy any controllers at the same time with mine. I simply used their online purchase system and Paypal.

I just went online and tried it. And although they may stop you from getting the deal if you call by phone, their online system does not know. I just went into Checkout with the ADVANCED software plus BOOSTER USB interface, for about $143 including UPS shipping. Sorry for not posting this sooner. It's been a crazy day !

Yes Denny is right, this is how I purchased mine. It was like a package deal or something.

Get the booster Scott. The LOR booster sources power for certain controllers and other controllers in the future. The LOR interface is a standard USB to RS485 interface but with a minor wiring change for the supply voltage--if I remember correctly. Like Vic said, the USB cable with the ferrite bead is extremely important as the fast switching of the triacs causes a subharmonic that manifests into the supply current. As a direct result, the subharmonic runs around the wiring in your house and couples into the RS485 interface which inherently will backfeed into your PC ultimately resulting in your PC locking up. The ferrite bead on the USB cable supplied by LOR does an adequate job suppressing that subharmonic.

And for only a measly $50, I'll sell you one of those "magic" ferrite beads!!!

The DMX dongle will NOT let you talk to an LOR controller via native LOR protocol, and can't be used from LOR S2.

Now, there are some cheap RS485 dongles that should work, but won't supply the magic power that some LOR controllers need to work...

Yet another reason to not buy LOR, but go DIY!

Now you did it Mark. You are correct but Chuck Smith has been hired to run this forum, and you will be banned for not conforming to my post. Everybody, please ignore Mark's post even though he is 100% correct. Bad Mark, go to timeout.

William, Mark is a troublemaker as always so delete his posts.

PS. On a serious note, the USB ferrite bead is extremely important and should not be confused. Walmart USB cables will result in problems when used with triac, PWM control. Mark will agree.

I must confess... I can't keep it inside me any longer... I have sinned with the LOR USB BOOSTER model ...

I ran it all last season with a plain USB cable, without the ferret beads ...

    OK ... I said it...

    I feel better now !

Now Chuck is going to ban Denny too. Yes, you can operate the network without a ferrite bead on the USB cable but in theory and in practice the bead is needed. Of course Denny will never read this post because Chuck has banned him.
