    Default Questions about Renard SSR

    Hey Everyone,

Well I am 96 channels of LOR and I really am happy with them.

I was wondering if it's more cost effective to add the Renard to the mix now?

Are they less then the LOR PC16 boards? Will I need to get Vixen or some other software package to include them? ARE THEY DIM ABLE?

Anyway if the price is considerably cheaper I may do that, Just trying to save money so I can spend it elsewhere like on much needed LEDs.

    Anyway please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Ted

The cost to build a Renard SS16 board is under $90. This is for the PCB, parts, enclosure, and 17 extension cords (@ $1.00 ea. ) It can run in DMX mode with the proper cable (must make this cable) Another cost that is involved with the Renards is a PIC programmer. This is highly recommended to buy one, the cost for a good one is $49.99 and comes with everything you will need.

Keep in mind this a true DIY project, you must buy the bare PCB, order the parts and solder the components to the board. They do not come pre-assembled. However, there is the very thorough instructions on assembly and setup on the SS boards in the DIYC wiki.

As for the software, I am not real familair with LOR nor DMX, but there are a few members at DIYC that are using a mix of both. They would be your best bet at getting answers for that.

    Hi Ted,

Mark will correct me but the Renard might not be LOR controllable. Instead think about the Lynx Express. http://www.diylightanimation.com/

Several of us are evaluating the Lynx with the LOR network. It might be after Christmas before we can say for sure that it works properly. However, we are pretty sure. Several people who are evaluating the boards with the LOR system are electrical engineers. So the results will be accurate and objective. I won't have a display this year, so Walter is my guinea pig. He likes it too.

Mark has posted a few times about the cost and associated issues with the Lynx Express. Mark has my back on this stuff.

Based on Wayne's respond that the Renard can be DMX, you can use the Renard from LOR with LOR software if you have an iDMX.

If you want to use other software, like Vixen or LightShowPro, then you can use both the LOR controllers and a DMX-based controller, like the Lynx Express or Renard. Understand that there are other requirements, like a USB-DMX dongle to talk to DMX controllers.

I don't know if the Renard is dimmable.

    Hey Everyone,

    Thanks for the quick responses!

Well I'm in luck with the PIC programmer, this hobby has peaked my curiosity about electronics so I have made my way up to the PIC stuff, mostly PWM and LEDs but it's a start.

I was reading it uses the PIC 16F688's which I may actually have a few of those around. I know I have the higher end ones like the 18F2550 that LOR uses. I also read that their is a zero cross opto coupler which is used for dimming in most cases but I have yet to find out if they do in fact dim. I would hate to lose the dimming effect.

Anyway looks like I may have to grab me a couple boards and order up some parts, I know I already have high end triacs and opto isolators from another project I did last year (10 channel chase unit based on a 555 timer and 4017 chip)

I guess I need to look at Vixen and Lightshowpro now as well any recommendations on those anybody?

Thanks again I hope the re syncing will not take to long with the new software and Renard but the extra channels will allow for some nice items I have been wanting to add but couldn't because I was limited by the lack of free channels.

Walter will have a mixture of stuff in his display to include the wireless DIY DMX module. His display should be a good test case.

    Hey Walter,

Yeah I was eyeballing those Lynx cards but I ended up going with the SS 16 & 24 Renards.

So I will have 96 Channels of LOR and 80 channels of Renard, So far I ordered the parts to populate two of the 16 channel boards and my current cost is at $110 to do that. I still need some items but I don't think I will pass $180 which is one PC16 kit from LOR.

So Walter I guess your kicking into DMX mode then or are you going to go with the iDMX and stay on the LOR software? Keep us posted I am interested in that wireless function!

For me it's more cost effective to go Vixen and all DMX. That's what I am looking at now anyway. I'll keep you all updated and maybe post a mini howto. I can say it's been a bit overwhelming at first but not to bad, just a load of reading.

    Thanks,
    Ted

Yea i'm going DMX but not with the iDMX form LOR. With the DIY dongle you can run your LOR and DIY boards.

I bought the iDMX and will find a way to incorporate it into Walter's display somehow. I'm not having a display this year but will let Walter use whatever he needs to make a good test of the DIY and LOR integration. I may buy LightShowPro to marry this stuff successfully.

So, Walter, are you running LOR S2, or going the LSP route for software?

Unless I'm mistaken, you need to run Vixen or LSP to use the DIY dongle and the LOR dongle. I don't think LOR S2 (or even S1) will talk to non LOR controllers, but I could be wrong...

As for me, I'm going to see if I can run 4 Lynx Express and at least 10 AL controllers with LSP this year. Hopefully my programming will catch up with my hardware soon!

    Hey Al,

I think it's great your helping Walter out!

I don't know much about LSP, I did poke around a bit and it really looks nice.

if you get it can you post us some info on it please?

    Thanks,
    Ted
