I've run and participated in a bunch of cooking contests with our annual rib cook-off at the dock. It was always the most popular individuals who were winning each year, even tho they really did not necessarily have the best entry. So we started a system to take volunteers to form a panel of judges. That gives the best entry the best chance of winning and takes popularity out of the equation.
The names of the entrants are kept secret and a number is given. A panel of judges is formed from volunteers, and they are not allowed to be family members of the entrants. It is important that the judges have no knowledge of who submitted any of the entries. Judging is set up on multiple criteria. The judges have to meet as a group, taste every entry, then vote on the preselected criteria. For example rate from 1 to 5 on presentation, and rate from 1 to 5 on taste. The points are totaled and a winner is declared. A smaller points system range tends to flush out the best submission..
It can be tough for 5 or 6 judges to taste everything. So they need to take really small portions and also have some water handy to cleanse the pallet ..
Just a suggestion ..
Congratulations to Lisa Kennedy for winning the Christmas Carolina Convention Dessert contest. Lisa's pumpkin roll earned her a $25 Lowes gift card. We had 11 great entries this year and I expect next year will be even stiffer competition for the coveted "Best Dessert" bragging rights for next year.
In a separate competition the Kennedy's also won largest animated snowflake as well.....
