Default The wind got me a little, anyone else?

    Hi All,

Well My large 30' arches got laid out today, right on the driveway. I am grateful it was not my mega tree! That's all so far I was wondering how William fared up in the Mountain where the wind can really get going?

I hope the rest of you all did well!

    Ted

Yep, wind real bad here last night and today. Have stuff leaning and scattered. Just shut the display down until Friday when I can inspect and make repairs.

Had a business trip to Wilmington, NC (the beach!) last night, just got back to Kernersville a little while ago. It was blowing at the beach, more than here. Wife had told me 2 or 3 of the wireframes that weren't staked from both sides had blown down.

Also, my inflatables were somewhat laying down, especially those that didn't have as many stakes as the rest. Also, I've got an 8 ft platform that I stack a few 8 ft snowmen up on - it's still standing, so things are fairly OK.

I am really proud of my MegaTree with 4 heavy guy wires (Thanks Al !). The wind is absolutely nuts tonight. My blowups went down first. All had to be secured much more aggressively. Everything else is tied screwed or stapled. Even the mini trees are dropped over 1/2" rebar .. It still freaks me when the mega tree is seriously deformed by the wind. I let the outer ring "float" so it can come up a little to relieve the stress. Otheriwse I think I might tear down some light strings.

Before the mega-tree I never worried about the wind. Now it seems like a hurricane .. ! Yipes ..

Well.... we had about 1/4" of freezing rain last night, so this morning when the ice melted some, that's when the trees were lowered because of the antipicated wind.

So far everything looks to be ok minus a few missing bulbs in the mega trees.

I've gotten use to the wind that I anchor everything down as much as possible.

We had gusts up to 60 mph here along with 2" of rain.

I spoke with Walter earlier and his star and megatree did just fine. No PVC on either.

Thanks Denny. The very first night of my first megatree experienced 55 MPH winds. It did fine too.

I very nervously watched the mega trees sway in the wind and my 8' spiral tree as well. I think I came through it ok, will be checking closer this evening. Hopefully no one had any major damage. With the forcast for Saturday I guess we all will be holding our breath a little more according to where you are located.
And on the 8th day, God created Christmas lights.

My megatree did fine; I learned after last year. The mini-trees weren't staked down though, so they fell over. They're now staked down :-(

    re: PVC

I have a 10 ft. Megatree that is ALL PVC. Had an issue a few years back with it blowing over - it was my fault in that I didn't have it guy wired in. I've learned my lesson - it now gets tied down, and since then, including this week's winds - it stays put and stays up, even with 4800 LED lights on it.

All the tomato cage trees (21 of them) and the 6' white twig trees (7) are attached to rebar in the ground and are still standing...

I've also got a Holdman style star on the peak of the roof - no sandbags, but it's braced on both sides. I had it fall over in the wind several weeks ago because it wasn't tied down. Since then it's now tied to the gutter on the back side, and didn't move at all.

wow it has been a nightmare week for everyone on the East coast. Sounds like most were able to rebuild without much loss. The wind seems to cause more damage than vandals.

Most of my stuff was broken bulbs from being slapped against the house all day...Christmas trees are leaning and had to restring lights that came off of the dormer...other than that...been fine.
