Top kill procedure didn't seem to work, according to news reports. BP said they have some other things to try and are proceeding down that path.

it's a shame that this happened, but with the thirst for energy, you've got to realize there's risk in every operation.

My opinion is the well will continue leaking until the relief well is drilled in August. This is a tremendous engineering challenge. The best minds in the world are scratching their heads on how to handle a leak 1 mile underwater.

Even though it's tragic, it's still not as bad as the Ixtoc 1 oil spill off the Mexican coast on June 3, 1979. The blowout preventer also failed in the case, and their engineers tried everything the BP engineers have tried so far with no success. And the Mexican well was in only 160 feet of water.

Nine months later, after drilling relief wells, it was finally contained.

EDIT: Here is an interactive map that tracks the spill, and forecasts the Gulf Stream Loop Current.

    I remember that spill.

The latest try to plug up the well will involve cutting the pipe and installing a shutoff valve of sorts. This will likely work from what they say, but the oil flow will increase until it is capped. If it doesn't work then we're in an even worst mess. I figure that they should make a huge finger and ram it down the well.

Maybe they should send David Blaine down to the Gulf to make the oil spill disappear. If he is unsuccessful then maybe the spill will make David Blaine disappear.

I've got it, they should send down mimes. The spill would try to avoid the mimes just like humans do and quickly move out to sea.

The cam has been awesome over the last hour or so. They are sawing off some of the warming pipes from the old line. At one point about an hour ago we saw the saw fly out of the robotic arm .. it was lucky it didn't sever the hydraulic lines to the saw. It took them a while to retrieve it and get it working. They are having a tough time sawing because once it jumps out of a slot, then it's very tough to get the saw going again in the same slot without it catching a tooth and jumping out again. Wow, what awful conditions that are working with right now .. !

Walter grab a reciprocating saw and cut that stupid pipe. You might need to wear a swimsuit as it's 1 mile underwater. Take some pictures too.

You think if he showed up in a pink wetsuit that it would scare the hole closed?

Walter ignore Brad. He subconsciously wants to wear pink clothing but needs social approval from his peers. Brad it is okay for you to wear pink clothing. Walter you should stop by Brad's house and pick him up to hold that stupid pipe for you to cut.

Here's an eyeopener. There are over 27,000 abandoned wells in the gulf ! That's outrageous ..
