Default SPT-2 Wire - Decent Deal

I checked Skycraft Surplus again today and noticed they have the Gray SPT-2 wire listed for a pretty good deal. Not quite as good as what we got about 6 months ago, but still about half price compared with Lowes or Home Depot. 1000 foot rolls for $80. I used my zip code for a shipping cost of $14.01. $94 is not too bad for 1000 feet to you door. Jump on it now or forever hold your Plugs (and Sockets) !

If you get 5000 ft (5 spools) then the price drops to 7 cents per foot ($70), plus the shipping per spool should be a little less than $14 each with a group ship.

    Dariusz Bartkiewicz wants 1000 ft.

I also spoke with Bruce Goeden on the phone a few mins ago. He is not sure if he wants a spool or not. But he said he would buy one if you need his order to make 5000 feet for the discount to 7 cents a foot. SO if you get one more order, then you are there. If you get two more, then we can give Bruce an option without impacting anything.

If you get 10 spools then everyone's price drops to 6 cent a foot ! Now we're talkin a great deal !

    One more day left!

    Current count:

    Scott.......3000
    Dariusz....1000
    Bruce.......1000

    Total .......5000

Price is now $350 for the order, but shipping options are now limited to "next day" for $484 or "call". Guess I'll have to call tomorrow for shipment options... If the shipping is going to be that much, they had better install all my lights, too...

Any one else interested? Speak now or buy yours at inflated prices at your favorite Home Improvement store at the last minute...

I'll post here when I find out about the shipping costs. I'll also extend the group buy until Friday to give y'all a few more days to think about it.

They will ship via truck freight. The problem is that truck freight to your home is a lot more expensive. When I did the group buy, I went to the freight terminal and picked it up (Morrisville). The guys at the terminal will let you take it off the pallet and leave the pallet. The freight guys and Skycraftsurplus are wonderful. But the freight terminal is only open during normal business hours whi ch means you guys with cubicles will have to take off from work. The guys that got a piece of our big group buy got a tremendous bargain as you now know. There is a palleting charge of something like $10 from Skycraft.

The more wire that you buy the freight gets far cheaper per spool. Another spool of wire barely drives the freight up much.

Shipping one roll was listed as $14.01 on the Skycraft site. So hopefully the total for 5 rolls can beat $70 .. I can help with pickup if needed ...

Anyone else need wire ? This is a really nice deal at $70 plus shipping for 1000 feet !

For 7000, shipping would be about $80 total to the freight terminal so a little more than $10 per 1000 ordered.

He also wanted to make sure we knew it was oxidized a little on one of the conductors. So there is a chance of limited connectivity where the vampire plugs pierce into it. He said it wipes right off, though.

I'm not quite sure what to make of it, but if Dariusz the electrician is willing to use it, so am I...

I will ask Dariusz tonight or tomorrow. That concerns me a little because if the corrosion is all the way through then I would think it may not stop "growing." And how do you wipe it off when the connection is made inside the plug ? I could see this being possible when using it as speaker wire, since the ends would be bare.

Hmmm. I have some of the Gray wire from the previous order. I have been making new cables with the vampire plugs but have never stripped it .. I wonder if our previous batch was also like this ? I will report back tonight or tomorrow.

I checked a spool of my gray wire that I bought during the last group buy from Skycraftsurplus and it is fine. Oxidation of a single conductor would suggest the wire was faulty prior to molding. If both conductors were oxidized then I would lean toward the insulation being faulty. I am no expert in materials, but I would think the oxidation would be contained to the outer surface where it is exposed to air. Surface contamination could cause a problem with insulation displacement connectors (vampire plugs) even after the connector is mounted. However, that can be the case with all insulation displacement connectors and all wire. Insulation displacement connectors slightly nick the wire during assembly which would displace the oxidation.

In my outhouse opinion, I would be hesitant to buy oxidized copper wire and use insulation displacement connectors.

If you guys do decide to go for it, I bet you could get them down on the price. Tell em the good stuff bought 6 months ago was perfect and cheaper. I'll call em if you want.

I don't know Vic. Their prices are dictated by copper prices.
