Default Possible group buy for Cat 5

I need CAT 5 cable. Is there any interest in buying CAT5 in bulk? I'm really not sure the best place to buy it, but I'll bet we get a better deal with a larger order. I need a couple thousand feet. I won't ship but may deliver it to the convention at the end of the month.

I don't need anywhere near that amount. I've already picked up what I'll use at my local Habitat for Humanity store, plus "remnants" I can get from work, where they don't have enough left on a spool to make it worth keeping the spool - 100 feet here, 50 feet there..... although that's not quite as common any more.

But thank you very much for thinking of the rest of us.

I'm good on Cat-5 as well.

But Jack, if you can pick up one or two of those 50-100 ft spool leftovers, I could probably use it.

Hey Al, have you tried any of RJ's wireless TX/RX modules? I was wondering how they worked with the LOR/DIY mix of equipment. I haven't gotten on board yet and saw they ran coop's over the summer while I was gone. I wanted some real world feedback before jumping in and ditching the Cat 5 cables.

    Dave,
I tried RJ's V1 wireless last year when I was setting up some of my show. I had mixed results. I had some Lynx controllers on the roof, and the transmitter down near the basement. If I didn't have line of sight between the transmitter and receiver, it didn't work reliably. I did have one Lynx controller on the side of the house, and if I stood in the right place in the yard, it would block the signal and the lights wouldn't come on.

I went back to the cables for reliable operation of the show.

There is a V2 wireless design, and yes, there was a coop that's now just shipping out.

I've got lots more DMX controllers this year (some DC based) and will stick with a cable.

Just my experience - as I see it.

    Hey Mark,

I had went to Bill's house (wbuehler) and saw his setup for last season with the V1 wireless. He had to hang the transmitter up in a tree in his front yard about 10' off the ground to get a strong enough signal to run. The new version which Bill posted he has tested is suppose to have enough power to eliminate any problems with signal. I think I'll see how they perform over this season before shipping Al all my slightly used cat 5 cables. However I didnt have any issues last season so I might hang on to them after all, just in case.

Al got me thinking at the last convention with the idea of a 4 channel DMX SSR wireless in trees and wreaths having only one power cable to each display item, he's still got me pondering about how simple that would be for flexibility and ease of setup.

I would not and am not using the wireless this year. The version last year did not have frequency hopping capabilities and interference was a huge problem. My 2 cents says to wait.

I have 16 SSR4 for this year's display. I have a bunch of wreaths slated for the SSR4's.

Oh, each wreath has 2 wires going to it-power and network (cat 5). I will have 2 wires instead of 21 SPT cables.

I'm thinking the same thing. When I saw the Ren-W coop go on, I got my hopes up, but the transceiver they use doesn't have much of a buffer, being designed for the Renard protocol (similar to LOR, for the description) and not DMX. It has a 100 byte buffer, which, when I asked about it, I was told would not be enough for DMX. It's a shame, too, because one version of the transceiver supports an external antenna for better range; another has a built-in 1" whip antenna, and the lowest cost option was very similar to the unit that RJ's wireless unit uses; the PCB antenna.

I know someone who is planning to use RJ's wireless V2 unit, if he can ever get the parts that have been back ordered. I may risk it myself next year, so I can have the houses across the street as part of my display.
